MUCH has changed since then.  First off, I'm back in New York City and have slightly more free time, since I no longer have to study for exams, etc.

And thus, it's time for a new list….after, of course, I do the usual TWITTER and FACEBOOK.

TOP 5 SONGS ABOUT SUMMER

It's hot out.  I mean, really, really hot.currently, at 2:46 AM, it is 80 degrees.  Seriously, New York?!  Oh well, it's SUMMER!  Time for Beaches, free concerts, and most importantly, POPSICLES!

And along with summer comes a fantastic list.  Here are the top 5 songs about summer:

5.  Deadbeat Summer — Neon Indian:  To me, nothing spells summer in the 2000s (or 2010s) more than some sweet, smooth electro beats.  Neon Indian achieves those, along with vocals so lacidasically aloof that are so cool one could almost feel cold, a real achievement in the hottest of months.  Lyrically, there's not much here, but this song is nothing if not an anthem for deadbeat summers.

4.  School Out — Alice Cooper:  Hot guitar licks and a chorus to die for.  I don't know a single

person that hasn't hummed this song at some point of their lives — everyone has that day where school finally gets out and summer arrives.  Now that I'm done with school forever, its a thing of a past.  But I know I'll never forget that feeling, and this song will forever be connected to those emotions.

3.  Summer Nights — Cast Of Greese:  I know this is embarrassing, but I honestly believe this is an all time great summer song.  Obviously the topic (summer love) is brilliantly explored here, but the tune is so bouncy and happy, and fits perfectly with the theme of both summer and love.  Bonus points for nostalgia, which I'm sure more than a few people can agree with me on…

2.  Surfin' USA — The Beach Boys:  Not exactly a summer song, but one that contains the sentiments of

summer.  The boys of summer happiness couldn't be omitted from this list, and, like Greese's Summer Nights,  Surfin' USA perfectly captures the joy of summer through the brilliance of the Beach Boys' production, lyrics, and overall music.

1.  Summer In the City — Lovin' Spoonful:  As one who has resided in a city for his entire life, this song has more summer meaning than any other.  It perfectly captures what city summers feel like — hot, grimy, and inescapable…until night falls.  Once the sun sets on New York City (or any major city, for that matter) the 100 degree days become much more bearable nights, complete with the chance to party until the oppressive heat returns the next morning.

Now, onto today’s topic…

TOP 5 SONGS BY THE BEASTIE BOYS

OK, so I chose this topic because they’re one of my favorite bands/groups/artists ever.  But there’s a reason for that, right?  If any rap artist deserves more recognition for their underrated work it’s the Beasties.  I am friends with a large variety of people who consider themselves die-hard hip-hop fans.  And yet, none (that I know of) can name more than a handful of Beastie Boy songs.  It’s a shame and a travesty; in a lot of ways, these guys created modern hip-hop and even modern rap.  Their snarky, bombastic, fuck-the-man attitudes and innovative delivery, lyrics, and production set the tone for nearly ever subsequent artist in their genres.  Their music has withstood the test of 20 years and there is little doubt it will continue to grow better with age.  In short, The Beastie Boys are one of the greatest rap/hip-hop groups ever.

5.  Intergalatic:  There’s a reason this is probably universally their best known song; it was the most radio ready from the start, and shows just how much the guys value tight production.  The song is a great intro to the multifaceted talents contained in the Beastie Boys.

4.  So What’cha Want:  As you’ll soon learn (or already know…) each Beastie album really represents a new direction for the band.  On “Check Your Head” the Beasties rely heavily on their Punk roots (they were originally a punk band before becoming a hip-hop group).  Furthermore, they played their own instruments.  On So What’cha Want, it is clear that they’re going for a harder, more aggressive sound, and that they want to prove to the world that while production is important to them, they’re talented enough to rock their own instruments as well.

3.  No Sleep Till Brooklyn:  Ill Communication, the album that started it all, was an expected success.  Until that point, no artist had created so much buzz with what they knew was such trite content.  Yet, the simplicity of their lyrics and the fun of their music caught on fast.  No Sleep Till Brooklyn is the most iconic song from this album — the intro chords give me goosebumps when I hear them.  In August 2009 when it was announced that MCA had cancer and the Beastie Boys had to cancel all live appearances, Jay-Z Stepped into the headlining spot at All Points West in New York City.  As an homage to MCA and the Boys in general, he opened with No Sleep.  And everyone knew it was coming from the moment the chords played.

2. The Sounds Of Science:  Following the unexpected success of Ill Communication, the Beastie Boys felt their artistic integrity being challenge.  What resulted was a dazzling array of samples, fun yet thoughtful lyrics, and the Beastie Boys showing that there is more to them than meets the eye.  Science remains one of my favorites because of how brilliantly all of this comes through — the use of  ”The End” by the Beatles for the entire second half of the song creates unbelievable tension, which is a huge departure from the first half of the song which bounces along to the beat of, again The Beatles’ “When I’m Sixty-Four.”  Starting slow but building progressively, the song is like a train, eventually ready to combust and explode with force.

1. Shake Your Rump:  Shake Your Rump stands are the perfect collision of the

various styles of the Beastie Boys.  As I said above, before Paul’s Boutique the Beasties were considered a novelty rap group, and after it, once sampling laws prohibited an album like this from ever being made again, they were on a mission to prove that their success wasn’t just a result of the brilliant production by the Dust Brothers.  On Rump, the speed with which the music comes at you is astounding.  Pop culture bombards you from every angle, and beat drops are abound.  And yet, through all the chaos, the Beastie Boys are still there, having fun, but with a purpose.

“Paul’s Boutique” is unquestionably my favorite Beastie’s album, and probably one of my favorite albums ever — give it a listen if you haven’t, and get ready for the ride.
